It’s Awoooooooright
Who would have thought that a roller coaster inside Dark Universe, based on a bloodthirsty werewolf, would be perfect for families and kids? Well, here we are, friends. Curse of the Werewolf is just that: a spinning, short, and rather tame roller coaster that should make every kid scream with laughter. It’s already being called the Barnstormer or Flight of the Hippogriff of Epic Universe, and honestly? There’s nothing wrong with that.
What we like about Curse of the Werewolf
In theory, Curse of the Werewolf is a pretty standard ride. You actually need at least one of those in a theme park, especially when it comes to roller coasters. As we said, Magic Kingdom has The Barnstormer, Islands of Adventure has Flight of the Hippogriff, and Hollywood Studios has Slinky Dog Dash. Even the queue here is very basic, and there’s nothing that will make your eyes pop. I’d say Curse of the Werewolf is the tamest of the roller coasters at Epic Universe, and a great stepping stone to see if your children will be roller coaster enthusiasts in the future.
It does try to at least offer something new, and that instantly makes it better than The Barnstormer and Flight of the Hippogriff, at least for me. This is a spinning coaster, meaning your seat can move from side to side as you climb hills and take on some turns. The vehicle is also very different, with two guests seated facing forward and two guests seated facing backward. It’s a fun gimmick that gives kids (and adults) something to talk about after finishing their transformation into a werewolf.
The track is very simple. You basically climb a small hill, make some turns, drop, and then comes the best part of the ride: you stop in the middle of a turn, your vehicle shifts sideways a bit, and then you shoot backward through a tunnel. It’s definitely the most interesting part of the ride, at least it’s trying to do something new. You go back and forth through that tunnel while a werewolf screams in your ears, which basically means you’re a werewolf now? I think? Anyway, I’ll take this over other roller coasters that are also a minute long but don’t do much with that time.
What we don’t like about Curse of the Werewolf
Curse of the Werewolf is a pretty simple family coaster, so you probably know by now where it falls short. One of the main drawbacks is the runtime. It lasts only one minute, making it just a few seconds longer than your typical junior coaster. There are a few turns here and there, but most of your time is spent in the tunnel section, where your vehicle moves back and forth. For kids, that’s something really cool and fun - and a brand new experience as they work their way up the roller coaster ladder - but for adults, it often feels like the ride needs a bit more.
Another issue is the ride height requirement. Curse of the Werewolf is seen as a family coaster, but it requires guests to be at least 40 inches tall. To put things in perspective, Slinky Dog Dash has a 38-inch requirement, and The Barnstormer just 35 inches. There really isn’t much here that justifies a 40-inch height limit, especially considering how tame the ride is.
Conclusion
Curse of the Werewolf is okay. It’s the definition of a 7/10 ride, honestly. It’s short, but that’s expected from family coasters. It does have some very fun gimmicks, and going back and forth through the tunnel while your vehicle spins a little will always get a laugh. It is, however, a very short ride, and the height requirement might mean your kids won’t be able to ride it.
