Bring out the champagne, Mickey Mouse!
One of the most iconic rides in all of Disney World is older than most people on planet Earth. Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom turned 50 years old on January 15, and it’s safe to say that this ride has aged like fine wine. In fact, it’s one of my favorite rides in the entire park and still manages to be an incredibly fun coaster, even though it’s half a century old.
We’ve reviewed this awesome indoor dark coaster here at Famvia before, even giving it a 8/10. Space Mountain has undergone many updates over the decades, but the track layout hasn’t changed much. It’s all about playing with your senses, making it feel like your vehicle is going faster than it actually is.
Being completely surrounded by darkness also makes it seem slightly more dangerous, as some cars appear to zip right above your head. My cousin is almost 6’5” and gets super scared on Space Mountain, refusing to raise his hands every time.
Disney World celebrated the special occasion this past Wednesday with a fireworks show and with appearances from Mickey, Minnie and friends. It’s actually crazy to think that this ride opened on January 15, 1975, and actually opened before the one in Disneyland.
Here’s to another 50 years. Space Mountain is a classic, and I hope that nothing ever happens to it… *looks at Splash Mountain*... this is such a unique ride, and a great family coaster for basically everyone out there.
If you are in Disney World, you need to visit Magic Kingdom and come to this ride. It’s janky, it’s a bit uncomfortable, but it’s absolutely awesome and a trip to the history of Disney… and space, of course.
