Welcome to Universal’s version of The Barnstormer
Ah, kids' roller coasters! I’ve been on so many of them that I’ve lost count, from The Barnstormer at Magic Kingdom to Flight of the Hippogriff at Islands of Adventure, and the now-defunct Woody Woodpecker coaster at Universal Studios. Speaking of that bird, it seems that Woody Woodpecker still exists at Universal Studios, but his form as a crazy red bird has been transformed into a… troll?
The new Trolls Trollercoaster, which launched at DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios, is very similar to the old Woody Woodpecker roller coaster. Instead of the classic cartoon character, though, you get the trolls. Instead of the classic Woody Woodpecker laugh, you get… nothing, I guess? This is a standard kids' roller coaster that doesn’t do much to differentiate itself from the rest, and mostly counts as a bonus thing to do inside DreamWorks Land.
What we like about Trolls Trollercoaster
In fact, the question above should be changed a little bit to, “Will kids enjoy it?” The answer is… yes. Although this is a perfectly tame ride for adults, small children seem to love it. I was able to ride it twice when I was at Universal Studios, and the kids inside the ride vehicle loved it. One of them actually exited the attraction just saying that he wanted to ride again.
That’s what this ride is all about, after all, right? To give young kids the chance to experience the thrill of a coaster before they are old enough to ride Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and then the VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure. In that regard, Trolls Trollercoaster is a success.
This is a ride for younglings up to 36 inches tall and a stepping stone for family coasters out there. It’s an extremely short ride at just 44 seconds, but that’s also the case with The Barnstormer. It has a main short drop and a few twists and turns, but that’s about it.
The best thing about this coaster is that it’s located inside DreamWorks Land, and there will always be something for your kids to do once they are done with the Trollercoaster. I like to see this ride as a bonus to DreamWorks Land, as kids can ride it if wait times are low before they enjoy the playground at Shrek or head to the Kung Fu Panda theater.
What we don’t like about Trolls Trollercoaster
I don’t like that this ride is less charming than the Woody Woodpecker coaster. C’mon, Woody was full of charisma and a piece of nostalgia for older guests, but now we have… trolls? The classic Woody laugh before the main drop was removed, and nothing was put in place of it, which is also a bit of a bummer.
The ride is also extremely short, which is common for kids' roller coasters. At just 44 seconds, it’s definitely not worth riding if the wait time is over twenty minutes. At least your kids can always enjoy DreamWorks Land while you keep an eye on the queue, and then ride it with your family once the wait times are lower.
