One of the best places to stay if you’re considering getting a Universal Express Pass... or just a nice tan at an incredible pool.
Is there anything better than staying at a hotel just 15 minutes from Universal Orlando, where you can wake up early, enjoy a nice breakfast, and head straight to Islands of Adventure to ride the VelociCoaster before everyone else?
Actually, there is.
Imagine a luxurious hotel that offers all of that AND provides a free unlimited express pass to Universal Orlando. Welcome to Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, one of Universal Orlando's premier resorts, offering exceptional perks with rooms starting at $500. It’s not cheap, sure, but you’re paying for one of the top resort experiences in Orlando, with eight on site restaurants, three swimming pools and even an on-site spa.
What we like about Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
Loews Portofino Bay is beautiful. Just imagine several cozy, colorful buildings nestled beside each other with a vast lagoon stretching in front of them. The architecture is really impressive, honestly. I like to compare this resort to a charming European village: it’s beautifully maintained, with cobblestone streets reminiscent of Venice, complete with a large canal. Loews Portofino Bay could easily feel like a small city, with so much to see and do, from an impressive number of restaurant options to its huge swimming pools.
There’s so much to enjoy here, and even if you’re staying at Portofino Bay for just a day, take some time to explore and snap a few photos. The perks are well-known among guests by now: you get Early Entry access to Universal Orlando and an unlimited express pass, allowing you to enter most attractions at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure with little to no wait.
The express pass is especially valuable at Portofino Bay, where it would otherwise cost up to $200 per guest. By staying here, you pay around $500 per night and get the pass “for free.” For larger groups, this can mean significant savings. Many guests choose to stay at Portofino Bay for just a night or two to enjoy the express pass, which is valid both on the day you arrive and the day you check out. This perk is especially great during the summer and around major holidays when Universal gets particularly crowded.
You’re also within walking distance of Universal’s CityWalk. Given the resort’s size, it’s hard to predict exactly how long the walk will take, but it shouldn’t be more than 20 minutes. You can also hop on one of the water taxis if you prefer. The water taxis at Portofino Bay are very efficient, departing roughly every ten minutes, and often end up being faster than just walking.
The pools at Portofino Bay are fantastic. One even resembles a real beach, with white sand alongside a freshwater pool and several nearby restaurants. You’ll also find water slides, rentable cabanas, bands playing live music and nightly movies for a touch of romance. The main Beach Pool is surrounded by several hot tubs, complete with small waterfalls, perfect for those that want a bit of peace and quiet.
The rooms are also good, though most of them aren’t themed around any particular concept and may feel a bit generic to some guests (there is, however, a Minions suite for those that love these tiny yellow guys). Rooms usually have a classic style with warm brown tones that evoke European elegance. Rooms start at a spacious 450 square feet, offering plenty of space to relax. You might also consider a Club Level room, which includes access to the Club Lounge, where you can enjoy complimentary breakfast.
What we don’t like about Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

It’s hard to find much to complain about here. This is a massive resort with so much to offer that you should definitely set aside a day just to enjoy the pools and restaurants. However, this can be a drawback for some guests: the resort is quite spread out, resembling more of a beach resort than a convenient stopover for enjoying Universal Orlando. You may need some time to explore and find your favorite spots, which could be challenging if your main goal is to ride top attractions like Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure and the VelociCoaster.
Do I recommend Portofino Bay? Absolutely, especially if you’re planning to get a Universal Express pass anyway. This is a fantastic resort with plenty of relaxing spots. While there aren’t a lot of extra activities beyond the pools and evening movies, you’re getting plenty of perks and a cozy atmosphere for a price that’s notably lower than top-tier Disney World hotels.
You really can’t go wrong with it.
