Yes, there is a dragon here. Yes, it’s made of LEGO.

LEGOLAND Florida has a surprisingly solid lineup of coasters for younger riders, and The Dragon sits right in the middle of that sweet spot between gentle and thrilling. It’s one of the park’s most iconic rides, located inside the bright and beautiful Kingdoms area, and combines two things kids absolutely love: roller coasters and dragons.

The Dragon does a few things differently from a traditional coaster, and the easiest one to spot is that it combines a dark ride with a roller coaster. Think of it as LEGOLAND’s version of Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios, but made for kids, with zero fire, no scarabs or Brendan Fraser, and significantly more plastic bricks.

What We Like About The Dragon

Unlike most coasters that are all track and no story, this ride kicks off with a solid dark ride section that is actually pretty charming. You board your dragon-themed ride vehicle and head inside a medieval castle, where you’ll see LEGO minifigures hard at work in the armory, a wizard casting spells, and a massive red dragon perched atop a pile of treasure. There are lights, fog effects, and even some sound design that makes the world feel a little more alive.

It’s not quite Universal-level storytelling, but for LEGOLAND, it’s easily one of the best examples of how to use LEGO theming to enhance a ride. Compared to Islands of Adventure’s Flight of the Hippogriff, which mostly relies on outdoor theming and a nice view of Hogwarts, The Dragon gives you a whole mini adventure before the coaster even begins.

After that dark ride portion, the track speeds up as you head outside for the coaster part. You get a small drop, a few swooping curves, and a sense of speed that’s fun without being overwhelming. This part is similar to Magic Kingdom’s The Barnstormer and also fairly short, lasting for about 60 seconds.

This is the perfect “next step” ride for kids who have tried smaller coasters and want something a bit more thrilling without going full throttle. No inversions, no sudden drops, no scary moments - just a good balance of story and sharp turns. Even adults will find this one charming.

What We Don’t Like About The Dragon

Compared to Revenge of the Mummy, which blends coaster thrills with dark ride storytelling in a longer and more elaborate way, The Dragon feels a bit like the lite version. We get that it’s meant for kids, but a few extra seconds of outdoor track or a little more action in the finale would go a long way.

Once you exit the castle, the theming mostly disappears. You’ve got a few flags and props here and there, but it’s mostly just coaster track. It’s not a huge deal, especially when the ride is fun, but after the great indoor experience, the outdoor section feels a little undercooked.

If you’re comparing it to Flight of the Hippogriff, which at least keeps the Hogwarts backdrop in view and has Hagrid’s hut on the side, The Dragon misses a chance to really lean into its medieval setting. Imagine flying over castle walls or past battling LEGO knights. That would’ve been awesome.

Conclusion

The Dragon is one of LEGOLAND Florida’s most charming rides. It blends storytelling, theming, and coaster action into one fun, family-friendly experience that works perfectly for younger guests. The dark ride intro is a standout feature, adding a layer of immersion that other LEGOLAND coasters just don’t have.
