Soarin’ Through Legoland
Masters of Flight is one of the most popular attractions at LEGOLAND Florida, and for good reason. It’s promoted as the first “80-degree flying theater in the country” and uses technology similar to what you see at Soarin’ in EPCOT. This means that, yes, you will be seated on a large ride (couch?) vehicle and face a huge screen while a mechanical arm gently moves you from side to side, with crazy setpieces taking place right in front of your eyes.
The big difference is that Soarin’ focuses more on real-life locations, while Masters of Flight is all about the imaginative settings from The Lego Movie… which are sometimes cooler than what we have here in the real world. I mean, Legos are awesome, right?
What we like about Lego Movie Masters of Flight
You know those rides in a theme park that are great, but you wouldn’t exactly call them blockbusters? I’m talking about rides like Test Track at EPCOT or Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom. They’re fun and well-designed, but probably not worth the wait if the line is over an hour. That’s kind of how Masters of Flight feels. It’s a great ride that does a lot of things right, but there’s nothing I’d really call out-of-this-world.
Masters of Flight is very similar to EPCOT’s Soarin’, meaning you’ll be seated on a large, couch-like vehicle and cruise through different scenes with a massive full-dome screen in front of you. In the case of Masters of Flight, it’s actually the first 180-degree theater in the country. What does that mean? Well, it mostly means your vehicle rotates when the ride begins, revealing a brand-new screen that was behind you the whole time. It’s a cool touch, but I wouldn’t call it a game changer. The full-dome screen though? That one is awesome, and you can see LEGO everywhere you look at.
What Masters of Flight does well is showcase colorful and unique environments. You fly through places from the movies like Cloud Cuckoo Land, Middle Zealand, Candyland, and more. The locations are always vibrant and chaotic, in a fun way. At times, it even feels like a 90s music video, with so many random things happening at once. It’s definitely something kids will enjoy more than Soarin’.
I like that there’s a lot of action in Masters of Flight - and that’s another big difference from Soarin’. Masters of Flight also uses scents during its set pieces, with the smells of candy and gunpowder being the most noticeable. You go from battling pirates to traveling through space, all in the span of four minutes. Yes, your kids will be glued to the screen.
What we don’t like about Lego Movie Masters of Flight
Honestly, there isn’t much to dislike about this ride. It’s like a mix between The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios and Soarin’ at EPCOT. You could argue that being a “180-degree theater” isn’t all that impressive, or that it doesn’t bring much new to the world of motion simulators - but remember, this ride is made for kids who care more about action and may struggle with attractions that are too technologically advanced. For what it is, I think Masters of Flight does a great job of being a fun and effective motion simulator at LEGOLAND.
