Space Mountain, just without the Space portion
Ah, roller coasters! The heart and soul of any theme park. Matterhorn Bobsleds is one of the oldest attractions at Disneyland, having opened in 1959. It shares some similarities with Space Mountain, particularly the vehicle design, though the atmosphere feels more like Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom. You climb a steep hill, then slide down the mountain, uncovering its secrets and even escaping from a dangerous yeti.
I know, from what I’ve described so far, this might sound like the most dangerous and intense roller coaster ever. But relax, Matterhorn Bobsleds is a family coaster, on par with the intensity of Space Mountain. In fact, it might even be a bit less thrilling since it’s not set in the dark, and you can see what’s happening around you. Still, being family-friendly doesn’t mean it’s not fun, as it delivers plenty of laughs throughout the ride.
What we like about Matterhorn Bobsleds
This coaster is similar in design to Space Mountain. From a distance, it may appear to be a towering, massive ride, as it’s set on a snowy peak resembling Mount Everest at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom.
However, that’s mostly a trick to make the ride seem bigger than it actually is. Like Space Mountain, it uses the same technique of spinning around a single track, and it works effectively. The ride often feels a bit claustrophobic, with walls surrounding guests for most of the experience, and hiding the track layout does increase the sense of adventure like you are always moving forward.
Matterhorn is, above all, a fun ride. While it’s not the fastest, and it lacks loops or inversions that would make it more intense, it’s all about sharp turns and a few drops, though they’re never huge, they’re enough to give your belly a little tickle. It’s especially great for kids who are gearing up for more intense roller coasters and want something milder before tackling loops and airtime.
I also appreciate how this ride gives the feeling of an adventurous mountain journey, with the scenery constantly changing. You get to explore the interior of the mountain, where the walls seem to close in, but there are also moments when you’re outdoors, with views of guests walking around Disneyland. Your vehicle even plunges into a small area with water, resembling a tranquil lake.
What we don’t like about Matterhorn Bobsleds
There’s nothing inherently wrong with the ride itself. Matterhorn is a fun family coaster that provides an enjoyable experience without being overly intense. The main issue, however, is similar to that of Space Mountain: it can be uncomfortable, especially for larger guests.
Keep in mind that this is a very old roller coaster. While it has undergone some updates over the years, certain aspects remain unchanged. The vehicle is a bit small, and sitting down can sometimes feel uncomfortable, especially for your knees. The constant movement during the ride may also mean bad news for those with back pain.
Here is a top tip: the track to your right is usually more comfortable than the one on the left. You are welcome!
