The real myth: do SHARKS follow Cruise Ships?

If you've ever wondered if sharks swim around cruise ships, you're not alone. Cruise ships traverse vast oceans, leading many to ponder the possibility of finding these fascinating creatures during their voyage.

    SHARK

    Dun-dun... Dun-dun... Dun-dun-dun-dun...

Contrary to popular belief, sharks don't follow cruise ships. Their cruising speed is far below that of these colossal vessels. While sharks can reach speeds of around 12 mph in short bursts, cruise ships sail at an average speed of 23 mph, making it physically impossible for sharks to keep up for an extended period!

In reality, the chances of spotting a shark from a cruise ship are quite non-existant, and this is probably the only shark you'll see:

    SHARK

Ok, enough jokes, sharks may be near a cruise ship when it's moving slowly near a port, but there's little incentive for them to do so. Unlike fishing vessels, cruise ships offer no easy meals for sharks.

While sharks are sizable creatures, guests rarely see them from cruises. Although reports exist of shark spotting, they are rare occurrences.

But I WANT to see sharks!

Oh... o-okay? Well, the probability of spotting a shark increases in areas with stable shark populations and clear, shallow waters. The Bahamas, Mexico, Australia, Hawaii, and the Caribbean are among the best places to catch a glimpse of these creatures.

Despite the prevalence of cameras, there are surprisingly few photos or videos capturing sharks from cruise ships. Lemon sharks are also occasionally spotted at Royal Caribbean's private island, CocoCay, offering harmless encounters.

Shark attacks on humans are very rare, with the Bahamas reporting just 32 cases since the 18th century!

So, while the chance of spotting a shark from a cruise ship is minimal, the risk of a shark attack during your cruise is essentially zero. Travelers who want memorable moments may consider destinations where organized shark encounters are available.
