Sad news!
Princess Cruises had us waiting for their newest ship, the Sun Princess, and their inaugural voyage which was originally scheduled to depart from Barcelona on February 8th, 2024. The inaugural trip has been canceled due to unexpected delays in the ship's construction and delivery.
The decision to postpone the launch was made by Princess Cruises and Fincantieri, the shipyard responsible for building the Sun Princess in Monfalcone, Italy. We don’t have much information about specific reasons for the delay besides what they informed, which include factors such as supply chain disruptions and the need for necessary tests and inspection procedures.
This ship was originally expected to kick off the revolutionary Sphere class of vessels for Princess Cruises. The Sun Princess was built to offer a unique Mediterranean adventure. The canceled 10-night first trip was planned to include stops in Palma de Mallorca, Messina, Athens, Ephesus, Crete, Naples, and Civitavecchia (Rome).
Despite these steps back, Princess Cruises is offering full refunds to the guests who had booked the inaugural voyage. Additionally, guests will receive a 50% future cruise credit to be used on any upcoming cruises that sail before December 31th, 2025, which gives passengers two years to use their credit.

Princess Cruise is aware of the inconvenience that this cancellation could cause, so they are providing financial assistance of up to $200 per person to cover flight changes or cancellation fees from airlines. They are trying to make up for the disappointment of that last-minute cancellation.
