Good news, friends! Construction has begun on Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas for a brand-new pier that will accommodate not one but two large cruise ships.
Soon, you won’t need to board a tender to reach the beautiful shores of Great Stirrup Cay, enjoy the Hippo waterslide, or retreat to the luxurious Silver Cove. One of the most requested features on the island is finally becoming a reality!
One of the main drawbacks of Great Stirrup Cay has always been the lack of a large pier for Norwegian Cruise Line’s bigger ships. This means the ship must anchor offshore, and guests need to board a tender to reach the island. This process can take valuable time and is far less convenient for those who just want to swim or relax in the sun. In fact, some guests have reported online that boarding a tender to reach the island can take up to 45 minutes, which is definitely a significant wait.

The pier is expected to be completed by late 2025, so there’s still a lot of work to be done. However, just imagining that by 2026 we’ll be able to dock directly on the island and start relaxing without the long wait times is a huge plus.
Norwegian president and CEO Harry Sommer also had this to say. “This past Friday, we celebrated a major milestone! We officially broke ground on the construction of our pier at our stunning private island, Great Stirrup Cay! This exciting $150 million project will enhance access to our highest guest-rated destination in the world”.
Good luck, Norwegian Cruise Line! We will keep you update about the project and we will also be here when it's finally done and ready to welcome new ships, including the highly anticipated Norwegian Aqua.
