For some reason, I don’t like the idea of singing Under the Sea in a cruise restaurant
Relax, friends. I don’t actually think anyone sings "Under the Sea," "Part of Your World," or any other The Little Mermaid classic in this restaurant. Triton’s is named after Ariel’s father in the 1989 Disney classic, and the Little Mermaid touches are subtle but pretty in this restaurant, which can only be found on the Disney Wonder. Disney treats Triton’s as an upscale restaurant, even though it’s a complimentary offering and part of their standard rotational dining options.
Triton’s is indeed pretty, but it definitely shows its age, especially when compared to the most recent Disney Cruise Line restaurants. There are no shows or entertainment options here, and the Little Mermaid nods can be seen in the murals and beautiful artworks on the walls. However, some tables are positioned so far away from the art pieces that you might not even realize you’re inside a Disney restaurant at all.
What we like about Triton’s
I think what most people will enjoy about this restaurant is that it feels cozy, romantic, and quieter than most Disney Cruise restaurants. There are no shows or any kind of entertainment, so you’re free to enjoy a cozy night with your family without a lot of noise. The restaurant is also very elegant, and the subtle The Little Mermaid elements work in its favor, giving it a classy, elegant feel that could make it pass for a fancy specialty restaurant like Palo or even Enchanté aboard the Disney Wish.
The food is good, just not as amazing as other complimentary options like 1923 or even Animator’s Palate. I also think the menu is pretty standard. There’s an international selection of dishes for dinner, including lamb, roasted duck breast, pasta, and steak. I guess it’s good that they have different options for every taste. They could be considered a Jack of all trades, but a master of none.
Another good thing is that this restaurant is also open for breakfast and lunch, making it a great option if you don’t want to face long lines at the buffet. During the morning and afternoon hours, Triton’s offers table-service dining for those who prefer to sit down and have a waiter at their disposal. Lunch is a three-course meal with a variety of different dishes.
Keep an eye out for Lobster Night, a formal night that takes place on longer cruises (usually on 6-7 night cruises). On that night, your dining will likely take place at Triton’s, and Disney will have brand-new, tasty dishes waiting for you. Yes, they will have lobsters as well.
What we don’t like about Triton’s
The main problem with Triton’s is that it’s a little… boring? I mean, there’s no entertainment or show, which is fine, but the overall atmosphere could use more touches or a nice upgrade to better resemble The Little Mermaid. How about a big aquarium, or even some screens playing scenes from the movie? Or perhaps some official props and artwork from the animated and live-action films scattered around, like you’d see at 1923 aboard the Disney Wish?
The menu is also very safe and standard. All the dishes are pretty good, sure, even if none of them are out-of-this-world good. Since this is a The Little Mermaid restaurant, I wanted them to take some risks with seafood, but that’s simply not the case.
