The masterminds behind the masterpieces
We know Disney is a place filled with magic and incredible surprises day after day. But, have you ever wondered who is behind all these clever projects that make Disney - Disney - with all its beloved characters and great stories that always steal our hearts?
They are the Walt Disney Imagineering team, and in honor of the special National Inventors Day, Disney wanted to share with fans some of the top inventions that this incredible team has brought to life and has stepped up the game for Disney’s theme parks. How amazing is that?

“Free-roaming Robotic Characters”
There have been several tests already with droids that are able to go around the park side by side with a drone operator, and they are able to recognize different expressive gestures thanks to the simulation environments that are part of their chips. That's quite impressive, don’t you think? In a few years, we will have a real R2-D2 just walking around Galaxy's Edge and interacting with us!
“Audio-Animatronics figures”
This impressive technology debuted back in 1963, at the Enchanted Tiki Room (Disneyland), and has become a staple in all Disney since then. Animatronics are everywhere in Disney, after all.
This unique technology can now be found in so many different attractions around the parks in the shape of our favorite characters, such as:
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
- Frozen Ever After
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- And one of the tallest ones at Pandora - The Avatar World
For each of these creations, a huge amount of work has been done by the many professionals that integrate the Imagineering team, from Illusion Integration and Show Programming to Mechanical Engineering and Figure Finishing.
This resulted in the perfect combination of art and innovation, bringing magic to real life. Sadly, no Fairy Godmother had a hand in all that work, that's just us humans doing our best!
“Indestructible Robots”
Imagine a day you’re walking around EPCOT and you see Stitch doing a star turn.
Sounds curious yet cool, right? This can be a sneak peek of the future experiences that Disney is preparing for us all, thanks to the new indestructible robots whose prototypes debuted last year at the SXSW conference.
One of the characteristics that make this incredibly new technology so unique is the ability to create human connections through different movements and personalities that can be seen when you interact with them.
This surely sets the bar to a whole new level, erasing the line between reality and fantasy. As long as we don't have the next Skynet right in front of us, I am cool with this new technology!
