The Worst Months to Cruise to Alaska

The Most Challenging Months for Cruising Alaska

Alaska stands as one of the most fun destinations for cruisers worldwide, but when should you avoid booking a voyage to this state?

Alaska, with its majestic glaciers and quaint towns, attracts travelers from far away. With over 1.5 million tourists annually arriving by cruise ship, each month of the fleeting cruise season witnesses a significant amount of visitors.

It’s not all fun in Alaska

Not all months offer the same Alaska cruise experience. In June, you'll enjoy extended daylight hours, but be prepared for larger crowds. Conversely, September brings more rainfall but fewer fellow travelers in ports.

If an Alaskan cruise is on your radar, it's important to identify the least favorable months to visit, tailoring your itinerary most accurately. However, what qualifies as the "worst" month varies from person to person.

For some people, lower prices during inclement weather months are a draw, while others prioritize a sunnier forecast, even at a premium price.

So, which months?

The months of April, early May, September, and October are the least favorable for weather conditions. Well, Alaska's dark winter months are the most challenging, cruises aren't available during this time. Instead, the Alaska cruise season, including offerings by Royal Caribbean, typically happens from early May to late September, with some lines extending to April and October.

April is the beginning of the cruise season for select lines with drier weather in southeast Alaska despite chilly temperatures. When the spring unfolds, May brings warmer weather but when it comes to Alaska the unpredictability remains. Late May emerges as an ideal time to cruise, with fewer crowds and lengthy daylight hours.

So, which months are considered the "worst"? Interestingly, these months often coincide with more budget-friendly options for cruising. Shoulder season voyages, occurring during these less desirable months, typically offer savings compared to peak months due to lower demand.

The truth is that no matter which season you peak, Alaska is an unpredictable experience, that we recommend you to not skip if you are a cruiser fan, it’s something you will never live again!
