Bolt: The Roller Coaster Built on a Cruise Ship

Yes, friend, you read the headline right: someone woke up one morning, prepared a warm cup of coffee and then thought, “hm, what if I put a roller coaster on top of a ship?” what might have sounded like a crazy idea decades ago is a reality nowadays. Carnival Cruise Line, in fact, has three ships that have Bolt - the first ever roller coaster at sea - built on top of their most recent and advanced vessels.

Nowadays, Bolt is available on the Carnival Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee. This exciting roller coaster is designed like a motorcycle and can accommodate up to two guests. Riders must meet a minimum height requirement of 52 inches (4'3") and cannot exceed a maximum height of 77 inches (6'5"). The weight limit is 300 pounds per person and 440 pounds per vehicle. Children under 12 must pair up and ride with someone who is 15 or older.

A two-lap ride costs $15, and it’s worth it for the novelty alone. It’s also genuinely fun, with many guests online giving it positive reviews.

Of course that Bolt isn’t as huge or crazy as modern roller coasters you’d find at theme parks like Disney World or Universal Orlando. It lacks loops and inversions, or even any kind of high drops. But you know what it’s got? Style. You can even control the speed of your bike, which is a genius idea to let everyone enjoy it. Do you like thrills? Go full speed ahead. Riding with younger guests? Take it slow and enjoy the view.

We give this ride two thumbs up! It reaches speeds of up to 40 mph, which is impressive for a roller coaster of this kind. The track features gentle curves, fun air-drop moments, and a few bunny hills scattered throughout.

Two laps take around two minutes, which is a reasonable duration. Add to that the thrill of riding on top of a cruise ship, with the wind blowing through your hair, and the adrenaline rush is hard to beat.

Want to experience Bolt for yourself? Book your next vacation with Carnival and choose one of their newest ships. You won’t be disappointed!
